One of the current limitation of Experience Editor is inability to handle hidden fields out-of-the-box and even though there are multiple ways to solve this, I found that adding a Button-to-Ribbon approach is the most user friendly approach so far. This approach was described by Thomas Stern in his blog.

This module was design to enable management of custom metadata, or any other type of hidden fields, without writing code.


  • Documentation > Installation
    1. Install provided Sitecore package -installation will add new config file, that will reset IIS and may freeze Sitecore interface for short time
    2. Navigate to "Hidden Field Configuration" content item, under content node, and set desired fields in Editable Fields area.  

    1. Once configuration is done and templates, containing hidden filed, are added on Hidden Field Configuration  item. Navigate to Experience Editor and select Hidden Content  tab. Click Edit Metadata. Following modal should appear:
